What should I pack for Nyungwe Forest Safari?

Nyungwe is a rainforest, meaning rain is possible anytime! Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket, sturdy hiking boots with good grip, long trousers (to protect against nettles/insects), insect repellent, and a camera with a zoom lens for the primates.

Why visit Lake kivu in Karongi instead of Gisenyi (Rubavu)?

This itinerary visits Karongi because it is closer to Nyungwe and offers a more relaxed, scenic, and "retreat-like" atmosphere compared to the busier city vibe of Gisenyi. Karongi is famous for its many islands, including Napoleon Island, which makes for a superior boat cruising experience.

Is malaria a risk in Nyungwe and Lake Kivu?

Day 01 :

Arrival at Kigali International Airport – Welcome to Rwanda

Upon landing at Kigali International Airport (KGL), you will be warmly welcomed by your Hope Tours Africa guide. Look for a sign with your name! After a quick briefing on your upcoming adventure, we will transfer you to your hotel in the city.

Depending on your arrival time, you may have a chance to experience the vibrant, clean streets of Kigali. Enjoy a relaxed evening and a good night’s rest to prepare for the journey ahead.

Day 02 :

Scenic Transfer to Nyungwe & The Canopy Walk Adventure

After an early breakfast, we begin the scenic 5–6 hour drive to the southwest. The route winds through the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” offering breathtaking views of terraced farms and endless green landscapes. We will stop for lunch before entering the majestic Nyungwe Forest National Park.

In the afternoon, prepare for the famous Nyungwe Canopy Walk. This 160-meter long suspension bridge hangs 70 meters above the valley floor. It offers a bird’s-eye view of the ancient forest canopy and is perfect for spotting blue monkeys, l’Hoest’s monkeys, and varied birdlife. The feeling of walking above the jungle is exhilarating and offers unmatched photo opportunities.

Day 03 :

Chimpanzee Trekking & Ndambarare Waterfall Hike

Today is the highlight of the safari! We start very early (around 4:50 AM) to meet the park rangers. Chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda is a thrill—chimps are fast, loud, and active. You will hike through the dense undergrowth, guided by the pant-hoot calls of the primates. Once located, you spend an hour observing them play, groom, and feed.

After lunch and a bit of rest, we head back into the forest for the Ndambarare Waterfall hike. This trail is less crowded and leads to a beautiful cascade tucked away in the jungle. It’s a serene way to wash off the sweat of the morning trek and connect deeply with nature.

Day 04 :

Transfer to Karongi (Lake Kivu) & Napoleon Island Boat Trip

We bid farewell to the rainforest and take a shorter scenic drive (approx. 3 hours) to Karongi, a picturesque town on the shores of Lake Kivu. The air here is fresh and the views of the fjord-like inlets are spectacular.

In the afternoon, we board a private boat to explore the lake’s islands. The highlight is Napoleon Island (shaped like the famous general’s hat). We will hike to the top for a panoramic view and see a massive colony of fruit bats roosting in the trees. It’s a unique wildlife spectacle. We return to the shore as the sun sets over the Congo, painting the sky in oranges and purples.

Day 05 :

Return to Kigali & Departure

Enjoy a lazy breakfast overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Kivu. Late morning, we begin our drive back to Kigali. If time permits, we can visit a local coffee station to buy some renowned Rwandan coffee.

Your guide will drop you off at Kigali International Airport or your preferred location in the city, marking the end of a memorable 5-day exploration.
