The incredible mountain gorilla trekking is a must-visit and a once-a-lifetime experience while visiting Rwanda. The volcanoes national park is the oldest national park in Africa, founded in 1925, and it is home to mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, mountain elephants, buffalos, some species of antelopes, and more than 200 species of birds.
This 2 days trip will give you a great chance to explore and spend time with the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat of the Volcanoes National Park and interact with the former mountain gorillas’ poachers who turned now into mountain gorilla guardians to learn from conservation journey and how tourism brought back hope to their families and changed their lives for better.
DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1: Kigali City Tour and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will meet with our guide for a briefing before starting your Kigali city tour experience.
Kigali is Rwanda’s capital city, founded in 1907; it is also known as the cleanest city in Africa, with fantastic and green landscapes.
You will start by visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial to learn more about the dark story of the genocide against the Tutsi in 1994. After finishing, you will visit the local market to understand the local people’s lifestyle better. You will then settle for lunch before heating the road to Musanze, the home city for the Volcanoes National Park and the mountain gorillas for an overnight.

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla trekking, cultural experience, and return to Kigali
After early morning breakfast, you will be picked up with our guide from your hotel heading to The Volcanoes National Park HQ, where you will meet park officials for briefing before starting the fantastic trek of the Mountain Gorillas in the Volcanoes.
The trek may take 2-6 hours, depending on the gorilla family you are allocated to visit. Encountering gorillas, you will spend 1-hour memorable moments with them.
After the trekking, you will visit The Gorilla Guardians village to experience the stories of former gorilla poachers who turned in their guardians and share Rwandan traditional cultural experiences, including weeding and dances.
You will have a late lunch before driving back to Kigali, where our guide will drop you at your hotel or the airport if you depart the same day.
