Rwanda Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Rwanda is home to mountain gorillas found nowhere else on Earth. Volcanoes National Park, located two and a half hours by road from Kigali, is one of the most accessible gorilla trekking destinations in the world and Rwanda’s proximity, infrastructure, and park management make it the most straightforward choice for combining a gorilla trek with a luxury safari.
A Rwanda gorilla trekking permit costs USD 1,500 per person, issued by the Rwanda Development Board. The permit covers one hour with a habituated gorilla family, guided by expert trackers and armed park rangers. Permits are strictly limited to eight visitors per gorilla family, per day. We secure permits on your behalf as part of every itinerary we design.
At Hope Tours Africa, we handle every stage of the gorilla trekking Rwanda process — from permit acquisition and lodge selection to private transfers from Kigali. Our guides have first-hand knowledge of the trails, the gorilla families, and the seasonal conditions that affect each trek.
Eric Sabi, founder of Hope Tours Africa, has watched Rwanda grow into one of Africa's most sough after luxury safari destinations over more than decade organizing safaris and guiding travelers here.

EXCELLENT Based on 39 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Benjamin VVerified Great Experience Despite Limited Big Five Sightings I’m satisfied with the overall experience, even though we only saw 2 out of the Big Five. It was still a one-of-a-kind experience for me. Eric was very supportive from inquiry to booking, smooth and hassle-free. Germain, our guide, went the extra mile to track animals, especially the Big Five. Unfortunately, we only spotted two, but that’s part of the real safari experience, you can’t force wildlife to appear. Overall, still highly recommended.Posted on Tripadvisor Van NVerified Some adventures bring great joy As one of the first Vietnamese travellers to choose this tour, and also the only guest on that day, I was genuinely beyond my expectations with the experience. It was not only memorable, but also deeply impressive in a way that is difficult to put fully into words. First, the length of the tour is extremely suitable for travellers who do not have much time to stay in Rwanda. Second, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. The landscape is filled with stunning terraced potato fields, freely grazing cows and sheep, and hardworking local farmers still carrying baskets, digging the soil, planting potatoes, and harvesting crops entirely by hand, without the presence of any machinery. The journey also takes you through unspoiled forest, where golden monkeys, birds, flowers, waterfalls, and streams create a truly magical natural setting. The weather was wonderfully cool, at around 20 degrees Celsius, with gentle sunshine and a refreshing breeze. The hike itself can be quite demanding, especially outside the dry season, but once you reach the summit, the reward is so extraordinary that all you can say is, “Wow.” Third, I was especially touched by the helpfulness and dedication of the operator, the tour guide, and the porter. Finally, it is amazing food. One piece of advice: do not forget to order the potatoes, because the potatoes from this region truly deserve their reputation and are simply unforgettable. Overall, this tour gave me far more than I had expected.Posted on Tripadvisor Christopher DVerified Unbelievable Experience! My experience with Hope Tours was superb. Eric was very responsive and helped organise everything smoothly from the moment I sent the first WhatsApp to him. The trek itself is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and well worth the expense. I’m very grateful to Eric for making the whole day so memorable. It was enjoyable even having lunch together after the trek was done and getting to know each other in the car ride back to Kigali. If you are looking to go gorilla trekking in Rwanda, I cannot recommend Hope Tours enough!Posted on Tripadvisor Irene SVerified Highlights of Rwanda - not to be missed! We did a six day tour covering a chimpanzee hike in Nyungwe National Park, a golden monkey hike in Volcanoes National Park, Lake Kivu and Kigali. Eric was an excellent and flexible guide who supported us to do additional activities in the parks and whose knowledge about his country was exceptional. At each venue we were able to view the animals and sights we hoped to see with time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. This was an easy trip to book with excellent communication from Eric at all stages. Would highly recommend Hope Tours for any Rwandan trip.Posted on Tripadvisor S WVerified We love Rwanda. We saw the key spots and he was courteos. He had great follow up in ensuring ou Great experience with Hope Tours while we visoted Kigali. Beautiful city Beautiful people. Thanks Hope Tours for helping us to understand the real historyPosted on Tripadvisor JerryVerified Eric is great! We were lucky to have Eric as our guide during our trip in Rwanda. We did a city tour of Kigali including the genocide memorial and went to volcanoes national park for 3 nights for gorilla and golden monkey trekking. Eric was friendly and professional. He provided a lot of information about the country which was helped us get to know Rwanda better. He was well-organized and was always on time and kept us informed of the plans each day. The car was always clean and everyday he filled our water bottles with drinking water. In Kinigi he took us to the Dian Fossey center and a shop that sold some really nice work of local artists, he also suggested other activities including Gorilla Guardian Village but we didn’t have time to visit on this trip. We ran out of cash towards the end of the trip and he helped us made arrangements so we could pay/tip our guides and porters, which we really appreciated. We had a great stay in Rwanda and Eric definitely made the experience even more enjoyable!Posted on Tripadvisor cpollard7Verified Eric Sabi is amazing! We were in Kinigi (Volcanoes National Park) to see the gorillas and monkeys with my 84 year old mother. Eric went above and beyond our expectations!! Everything was perfect and he was so helpful, personable and caring. We have traveled extensively and Eric Sabi is definitely one of our top guides!!Posted on Tripadvisor Kathi WVerified definitely needs to be on the bucket list this was an amazing experience. We did one day with the gorilla track and the next day the golden monkey I can’t describe the feeling of walking up and turning a corner and seeing a family of Gorillaz, it was breathtaking and brought tears to my eyes. this is definitely a must do if you can swing it.Posted on Tripadvisor Serge TVerified Akagera and Nyungwe National Park Visit Hope Tours Africa did an excellent job! Everyone in our group enjoyed it. Highly recommended!Posted on Tripadvisor DayTrip589160Verified A wonderful guide and experience! Eric was a wonderful guide during our time in Rwanda. From the moment landed in Kigali to our time gorilla trekking, he was fantastic. Very organized, professional and friendly! He shared a lot of information with us about life in Rwanda, traditions and history. We visited the Genocide Museum which was very informative and emotional. He took us to a wonderful village in near Volcanoes National Park where we were entertained with singing, drumming and dancing along with learning about local culture. We also went to the Dian Fossey museum and a delightful local craft shop that supports female artists from the area. We had an unforgettable experience and we thank Eric very much for his kindness and hospitality! Murazkoze!

The best time for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is during the dry seasons: June to September and December to February. Trails are firmer, forest visibility is clearer, and hiking conditions are more comfortable. Gorilla trekking is available year-round. The wetter months of March to May and October to November bring lush scenery, fewer visitors, and often lower lodge rates. Read our full guide on the best time for gorilla trekking in Rwanda.
Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is moderately challenging. Treks last two to eight hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved that morning. The terrain is steep in sections and altitude reaches up to 4,507 metres. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Porter assistance is available at the park for approximately USD 15 to 20 — porters are members of local communities and hiring one supports them directly.
